Contact Lenses, Surrender Now | Report of an Almost Contact Lens Wearer – Part One

Glasses, or to be more precise ‘Eye Glasses’ (or even spectacles) have been part of my appearance for quite some time. I think I’m probably quite lucky because these days wearing glasses has reached a place where it can even be seen as a fashion statement and plenty of celebs can be seen sporting frames with non-prescription lenses in. Helena Christenson is one example and freely confesses that she wears glasses simply because she thinks “they make you look more interesting and a little bit smarter. They make me feel grown-up.’

But then there are some aspects of wearing glasses that just don’t fit well with the practicalities of your job. As a photographer, I have become pretty fed-up of spending my time during a shoot looking through glasses that keep getting smudged by the eyecup on my camera. Then of course when it rains, until I can find a good time to clean them, it’s like looking through a car windscreen when it’s raining before you’ve turned on the windscreen wipers. Not to mention that when you’re going from a cold temperature outside to a warm room, you instantly become steamed up.

And so the time came when I decided to try contact lenses. ‘Easy enough’ you say? Well…no. Not even nearly the case. For many years I’ve suffered from hayfever and even though I know that eyedrops will probably help my cause significantly, I simply cannot get a drop near my eye. I’ve always had a ‘thing’ about eyes and it’s only in the last week or so that I’ve been able to touch my eye for the very first time. That was a major breakthrough and part of some conditioning exercises I’ve been doing in preparation for having to get up, close and personal with my eyes in the course of putting contact lenses in and taking them out.

Today was day 2 of my contact lens trial. Just before day 1, (now being able to touch my eye – wooo!) I had told myself that everything would be fine and that previously I had blown the whole thing out of proportion, and that I was going to now find it refreshingly quick and easy to whack in some lenses and take them out. My view now: putting lenses in= definitely not easy…taking lenses out=definitely seriously not easy.

But I’m determined to persevere. Day 2 was definitely easier than day 1, so here’s hoping things continue in that fashion!

Kelly J - I have to wear contact lenses myself, as looking through a viewfinder in glasses is not practical. It becomes second nature to pop them in and out of your eye though, and it’s much easier not having steamed up glasses when you open the oven door too! 🙂

Andrew - Oh wow, someone else with a ‘thing about eyes’!! It’s not just me after all!

I couldn’t do it, not contact lenses. Respect to you, sir!

christian - Thanks for reading! Nice to know I’m not the only one with eye issues!
