For a while now I’ve been searching for a colour film stock that renders snowy scenes in the way that I’m happy with, and I’m pleased to say that Kodak Portra 800 has won; from now on I don’t think I will be using any other colour film stock for wintery scenes, and as far as b&w goes I think for winter I’ve settled on T-MAX 400. In my previous post I mentioned having received a new Cokin adaptor ring so that I could use my graduated filters. Also in my bag of goodies received in the post was a polarising filter, of which I haven’t used since the days when I shot digital, so I decided to try out the polarising filter with Portra 800 and I’m pretty pleased with this combination. We headed out around Hope again and after weeks of non-stop rain followed by days of heavy snow, we’ve been enjoying some beautiful weather here despite the very cold temperature. For anyone else looking to use a polarising filter with film, you just need to compensate for it by 1.3 stops to ensure a good exposure. All these shots were metered for the shadows at ISO 320.
