Kodak TRI-X 400 at 6400, Reala at 800, Neopan and FP3000B

I’ve been experimenting with a few different black and white film stocks lately, mostly centered around my two favourites: Fuji Neopan and Kodak TRI-X. I’ve shot TRI-X quite a lot at different speeds and pushed it back in the lab, and having pushed it to 6400 a few times last year I have been wanting to try it again, so this weekend I did just that….shooting it at 3200 (then pushing 3 stops in the lab) and shooting it at 6400 (and pushing 4 stops back at the lab). At the same time I had some Neopan in my Leica that I needed to finish, so I shot some of that for comparison. And just because that’s not enough, after seeing some of Erica’s Fuji Reala shots last week I decided I would add some colour into the mix. As Reala is a 100 speed film I shot it at 800 and pushed it 3 stops back in the lab. I had an idea of how it was going to turn out and it’s exactly what I was looking for. Such a shame that Reala is not around any more…I love the subtle tones. At the end I have also included a couple of frames of Fuji FP3000B shot through my Polaroid 600SE.

Thanks to my wife Erica for modelling for me! So here are a selection of photos, all developed and scanned at UK Film Lab. For the b&w I’ll write in the details of camera, film stock, development for each photo. All colour photos are Contax, Reala at 800 and pushed 3 stops.

Sergio - I love the deep blacks achieved pushing B&W film. Far better than Neopan at box speed.
Perfect for create this mood.
I agree with you when you say that pushing film is not (only) a way to compensate low light.
