It seems like a really long time ago now, probably because we’ve been so busy setting up UK Film Lab, but back in April/May of this year we visited Utah, specifically to take up an invitation from Jonathan Canlas to check out his FIND lab in Lehi. At the time, we were in the beginnings of UK Film Lab- our C41 processor and Frontier SP3000 was in place, we were about to start our beta testing phase and we were in the process of sorting out our black and white developing, so it was a great time to head on over to meet like-minded friends. Naturally while we were in Utah we wanted to see as much of the area as possible and we soon found out that Utah is VERY spread out. Nevertheless we made the most of our time there and saw much of a beautiful part of the US. Although all the film I shot there had been developed and scanned quite some time ago, it has taken me up until now to find the time to sit down and go through everything and pull together this blog post, and it’s a long one. There’s a real mix of film stocks – Kodak Ektar, Kodak Portra 800, Fuji 160NS & 400H, Kodak TRI-X shot at 400 and 6400 and Ilford Delta 3200. I used two cameras – a Contax 645 with 80mm f/2 lens, and my Leica M6 with a Zeiss Sonnar 50mm lens. All film developed and scanned by us at our UK Film Lab.
First up, this is a town called Helper, shot on Kodak Ektar. It was kind of a ghost town…
Our hotel was in Provo, not too far from Lehi. Here are some shots of downtown Provo, on Fuji 400H.
The FINDlab peeps, shot on Portra 800.
On one of our spare days we drove down to Arches National Park and Moab. This shot is TRI-X shot at 6400 and pushed 4 stops back at our lab. This was on my Leica M6.
Arches National Park, on Fuji 400H.
On one of our other days we headed to Park City. We were there around midday and it was incredibly bright but all I’d got with me was Portra 800. These are all over-exposed by 3 to 4 stops…I love how they’ve come out.
After we’d visited Bonneville Salt Flats we drove on into Nevada. We saw this deserted airbase and decided to find our way to it.
We were pretty lucky to have such amazing weather for our trip to Bonneville Speedway (salt flats)…I’m not sure it would’ve looked so incredible without the sun and blue sky.
Our trusty car:
We were the only ones on the flats, apart from this one couple in an Airstream, flying a kite.
Phil Hearing - Great shots mate
Erik Andersen - Very nice images. I’ve been following your blog recently. I shoot a mix of film (medium format and 35mm) and digital. And I really enjoy your images and commentary. Keep up the great work and keep posting.
